Slutsk belts

Slutsk belts - this is one of the assets of my country. Poets sang of its beauty (Adam Mickiewicz and Maxim Bogdanovich), a surprising charm belts crazy many collectors to this day. In this post I will explain this miracle of Belarus.

The name of the belts made of town of Slutsk - in this city began to make the belt in the 18th century. Belts themselves were made up to 4 meters in length and 40-45 centimeters in width. Such decoration could afford only a rich man, because is woven of gold and silver threads and decorated with gold fringe. Price zone reaches up to 1,000 zlotys (the annual income of a simple Polish officer) or 50 ducats. At times one had to be from 400 to 800 grams of gold!

Patterns for these belts came from Persia, so the first zone called "persiyarni". In order to prevent the production of a weaver, he was trained for 7 years. And only then the weaver could depart from the Eastern patterns and colors to weave me-nots, the leaves of oak and other local patterns in the fabric of the belt.

Only men woven belt at the factory. At that time it was believed that a woman by her touch to gold and silver defile these metals. By the way, in Slutsk in the best of times (at the turn of the 17-18 centuries) worked more than 60 weavers! Patterns for the belts were invented by artists. Moreover, these patterns are constantly changing depending on which country sent the belt. For example, for the Arab countries were selected corresponding patterns, for the European countries were quite different patterns.

There was a tradition to wear a belt in a holiday red side up, and in mourning - black side up.

After the third partition of Poland (after 1795), when the territory of Belarus was included into the Russian Empire, were forbidden to wear the Slutsk belt and manufacture began to decline. Now the technology of weaving Slutsk belts is irretrievably lost. Moreover, in Belarus there are only five (!) belts, of which the museum can see only one (!). The rest of the belts went to private collections and museums around the world (for example, the Museum of St. Petersburg, Lvov, Warsaw, etc.)

One can only hope that in future the Belarusian again learn to weave the Slutsk belts. Now it is very important: in Slutsk still works manufactory, which manufactures products in the folk style. I, for example, there are two bags in the Old Belarusian style. These bags any more who do not: they are produced in a single copy. Belt (so rich as before) is now not allowed to because the trade secret is lost. But the factory weave wonderful belt of colored threads, such products can be purchased in the Belarusian stores.

  1. It was very important part of gentry's chlothes. I didn't know that Slutsk is in Belarus now. I thought that it was in Ukraine. It is big testimony of past culture.

  2. Belts
Actually, seatbelts help your driving too. They keep you in the seat so you can feel what the car is doing and react accordingly rather than sliding around and having to brace against

    1. I imagined this picture: Belarusian sitting in the car, and instead of a seat belt he has Slutsk belt, which is embroidered with gold and silver threads, decorated with intricate designs and precious stones. From an aesthetic point of view is very beautiful. I really do not know whether the police appreciate this beauty?
