Merry Xmas!!

May the Love, Peace, and Joy of Christmas be yours always. Love came down on Christmas Day so many years ago and brought the greatest happiness the world would ever know... Peace came down on Christmas Day to fill the hearts of men with all the sweet tranquility each Christmas brings again... Joy came down on Christmas Day as angels came to earth heralding the miracle of our Messiah's birth.

I'm ill

To my deep regret, I can not really write a blog as often as before. When I was in the sanatorium in Russia, I fell ill and now I'm lying in the hospital. I took the phone, but internet does not work here. Almost. So I'm lying, reading books and taking medicine and injections. I'm not sure that I will return home before Christmas. But I hope so.

Election Day in Belarus

The presidential election is underway in Belarus, BelTA informs. The electoral register comprises over 6.9 million voters, including more than 5,700 outside Belarus. Polls will be open from 8h00 till 20h00.

Four candidates are running for the post of the President of Belarus: Sergei Gaidukevich, Tatiana Korotkevich, Alexander Lukashenko and Nikolai Ulakhovich.

Their names in the alphabetic order are given in ballot papers distributed among people who come to the polls. The ballot paper contains the rules to fill it in properly. Each ballot paper should be signed by at least two members of the precinct election commission. Ballot papers also contain the candidates' date of birth, profession, position, occupation, employment and residency and party membership.

There is an empty box to the right of each entry. There is also a ballot choice “none of the above”. The voter takes the ballot paper to one of the booths, which are screened to ensure secrecy. The voter puts a mark in the box next to the name of the person he/she wants to vote for. In order to vote against all the candidates, it is necessary to mark the box “none of the above”. Over 7 million ballot papers have been printed in Belarus for the election. The number of reserve ballot papers should not exceed 5% of the voters. They have been distributed among polling stations. If the ballot paper is spoiled, the voter has the right to ask for a new one. The spoiled ballot paper does not count. Apart from that, ballot papers are considered invalid if they differ in size, color and quality of paper or if they lack signatures of members of the precinct election commission. Ballot papers are also considered invalid if they contain marks in more than one box or have no marks at all. This election campaign people with visual impairments are able to vote without another person's help. Polling stations have been equipped with special voting devices.

The results of the election are announced by the Central Election Commission not later than 10 days after the voting is held. The president election is recognized as valid if more than half of eligible voters take part in the polls. The head of state is recognized as elected if he/she receives more than half of the votes. The Central Election Commission provides mass media with the results of the country's main electoral event not later than three days after the protocol on the results of the election is signed.

Svetlana Alexievich gets Nobel Prize in literature

(CNN) Belarusian author Svetlana Alexievich, known for chronicling the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, was awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize for literature Thursday "for her polyphonic writings, a monument to suffering and courage in our time."

She is only the 14th woman to win the prize, which has been awarded 107 times.

On her website, Alexievich says she records conversations with 500 to 700 people for each book she writes.

"Real people speak in my books about the main events of the age such as the war, the Chernobyl disaster, and the downfall of a great empire," she says. "Together they record verbally the history of the country, their common history, while each person puts into words the story of his/her own life."

'A history of human feelings'
She does not, she says, document a dry history of facts and events.

"I'm writing a history of human feelings," Alexievich says. "What people thought, understood and remembered during the event. What they believed in or mistrusted, what illusions, hopes and fears they experienced. This is impossible to imagine or invent, at any rate in such multitude of real details."

A song about the president won YouTube

I beg to take this song with humor. This song is a perfect example of folk traditions. It has a long history. People just replace the names in the song and it becomes urgent)))

Nature of Telekhany

This photo was taken in the village Telekhany. This is the heart of Belarus. I lived three years near this village and I can confirm that this is truly a beautiful land. In winter, majestic forests and snow-covered fields surround the village on all sides. In summer, forests full of berries and mushrooms, all of the local population picks them and makes stocks for the winter. There I saw elk and wild boar, foxes and wolves. They are not afraid of people and are located on the outskirts of the village.

Concert "We are together" in Gomel

It's very simple . This is concert of Belarusian singers. I was there. And the camera several times showed me. But this is almost not visible, alas ...
If you watch this show for 10-15 minutes, you will see the Belarusian showbiz stars. Yes, they are not world-class. Yes, the song is too colorful and perhaps outdated. But the public loves these songs, many people have grown up on them. Therefore, it is an original mixture of memories and the present (at the end you'll see Teo, he performed at the Eurovision Song Contest this year).

Belarusian Potato Babka

I can still remember watching my grandmothers make potato babka and climbing up on the chair behind the kitchen table to enjoy this potato goodness. My uncle reminded me of this great recipe and I decided to make it. It turned out even better than I remembered and I wondered why I hadn’t made it sooner. It’s very similar in taste to Potato Pancakes, but cooked in a different way. The potatoes are creamy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Using raw grated potatoes makes the texture so unique. Enjoy with a bit of sour cream and some fresh minced herbs.

Yields: 4 servings

Dreams of autumn Minsk. 1965

This video was filmed in October, 1965. You will see Minsk and its inhabitants. The teacher with the students. The boys, who walk in the autumn park. How little machines were then and  people could cross the road at any time!

It is the shadow of a bygone era. And for some reason I want to cry.

Mission Impossible 5. Funny moments

Yesterday I was in the cinema, I watched a new movie with Tom Cruise. This film shows a week in Belarus, but I could not get to the premiere. Finally it happened yesterday.

The audience began to laugh with the first frame of the movie. We saw a green field, forest and the inscription on the screen: Minsk, Belarus. Oh yeah! Our Minsk is a small town with no houses and no streets. And there are no people, too. Only the airfield)))

Then we began to laugh even more. One of the heroes hardly understands the control program of the aircraft, because the program is in Russian.. It turns out that the modern spy speak and read English only)))

Of course, the "Belarusian chemical weapons" appears in the frame. After the movie "Swordfish" This caused a new wave of laughter in the hall. And the letters !!! These weapons should be marked only in the Cyrillic alphabet. By the way, these letters are now our internet meme)))

In general, thanks to the film's director for the opportunity to make fun of Hollywood cliches!

Fyodor Machnov. The tallest man on the Earth

Many photos!!!
Fyodor Machnow, is the tallest person on Earth. 137 years ago in the ordinary Belarusian village Kostyuki was born the tallest person on the planet Earth. The growth of Fedor Machnow was 285 centimeters. "Calendar 1905" said: “In order to have an idea about the extraordinary growth of this giant, it is necessary to say that his high boots reach the waist of an ordinary mortal, and a 12-year-old boy can fit in them quite freely with his head.” It’s about Fyodor Machnow – the tallest man on the planet Earth, who was born in a small village Kostyuki that is in Vitebsk region. It happened on June 18, 1878.

Fyodor was the firstborn of a young peasant mother, who died in childbirth. Fyodor was raised by his grandparents. Initially, Fyodor was a usual kid, the same as his peers. But somewhere at the age of 8 Fyodor began to rapidly grow and gain strength.

MILKI - "Accent"

The song was written by Alexander Rybak and produced by Amir Aly at YLA Studios. The 5 members of MILKI (“The Cuties” in Belarussian) are: Tatsiana Stakhouskaya, Marina Putnikova, Taya Serikova, Victoria Nazarko, and Anna Rai.

This song took part in the Belarusian stage of selection of Eurovision Song Contest, but failed. Alexander Rybak was offended by the Belarusian jury. I do not know how Europe would vote for this song, if it won the national selection. Everyone has an opinion. I like the song Uzari & Maimuna, but I like this song too.

My accent is the same!

You are the love of my life,
you know I’m always by your side
(By your side)
You have a choice, baby;
I can be yours ‘til the end of time
(End of time).

But if you wanna be with me,
there’s one thing you need to know
(You need to know)
I will do anything you want,
but you will never change my soul.

Because my la-la-la-la
my la-la-la-la
my la-la-la-la
my accent is the same!
my la-la-la-la
my la-la-la-la
my accent is the same!

My accent is the same!

[Belarussian lyrics]
My darling, tell me,
But tell me the truth,
What were you doing yesterday?
With whom were you walking all night long?

I began to follow him
To catch him with his mistress,
It turned out – he is working
To feed my relatives.

Independent Belarus: 25th Anniversary

A bit of history
25 years ago, the Supreme Council of the BSSR adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Belarus. This document is the first official step towards the independence of Belarus, and this day, July 27 has been declared the country's Independence Day. According to the Declaration, Belarus was proclaimed a sovereign state, which is based on self-determination and statehood of the Belarusian language, the rule of the people to determine their destiny.

August 25, 1991 Declaration of State Sovereignty has received the status of a constitutional law on the basis of which changes were made to the Constitution in 1978. The new Constitution was adopted March 15, 1994.

The celebration was canceled after the referendum, 1996. Independence Day is now celebrated on the day of liberation of Minsk from the Nazi invaders on July 3. But I think that we should not forget such an important date in the history of the country. So today I am celebrating. I'm sitting with a cup of tea and sweet cakes and am writing this post.

Potato sausage

Potato kishka appeared in the national cuisine in the 19th with the spread of potato (bulba), which is called "the second bread" in Belarus. The prototype of the potato kishka was even more ancient dish – sausage made from blood and buckwheat stuffed into pork intestine (kryvyanaya kishka). By the way, according to a legend, the influential noble family Kiszka got their name because the founder of the dynasty was very fond of the sausage. There are also recipes of kishka without blood, with cooked pork.

The sausage made from grated potatoes and pork (bacon and/or meat) became very popular among Belarusians as a delicious, affordable and nourishing dish.

For four servings you will need:

Krambambulya - Dolce Vita

This song became popular almost immediately after the broadcast. I heard this song on the radio, and on television and in the pages of social network.

Description of the song.
The guy wanted to live a beautiful life, but  there was nothing beautiful around him, only gangsters and police. His chief is always scolded,  and  his wife kicked  guy out of the house. Son got the lowest mark. His lover and his wife were far from the girls of Playboy.... In general, life was dull and uninteresting. And the man dreamed of la dolce vita.
Where are you, dolce vita? Where is tequila, margarita where, where?
Once his friend got a photo, there are two beautiful blonde hugging a hero and there were the ocean and palm trees on the background of photo. But the hero wrote that he was tired of the good life, and he misses his chief's cry))

There have been several cover version of this song, I'll post the best)))

50 ruble notes are withdrawn from circulation

50 ruble banknotes are history in Belarus. Banknotes with the image of the Brest Fortress are withdrawn from circulation.

The National Bank considers their use impractical. Thus Belarus plans to save on production of the note.

You can no more use the 50 ruble payments in stores but banks will still accept them until September.

Wooden filigral from Gomel (video and many photos)

Unique Belarusian machinery of the woodwork - wooden filigree, or as it is called - Sozh filigree. Lace pattern is laid out by chips of different wood. An ancient technique used in the XV century to decorate the icons, it was forgotten until 1990, when the master from Gomel, Vladimir Tsikunov, revived this art. This method of decoration is also called "The Belarusian filigree", "Gomel Filigree", "Sozh filigree", "Tsekunov's filigree" or simply "Tsekunovka". The price can go up to several thousand dollars, by the way. Works by Vladimir Tsikunov are in the collections of many influential people such as politicians and cultural figures (Queen Elizabeth II, the Pope, Vladimir Putin, Alexander Medvedev, and others).
Gomel master died in 2008, but his art lives in the disciples, following the work of some of them. Gomel filigree is a unique phenomenon, the only school in the world is located in my hometown and there is a great reason to be proud of Belarusians who have the talent and the creative spirit at the genetic level.

Hurricane in Gomel

I'll just leave it here.
Only half an hour ... It lasted only half an hour ... but it was scary.
